The song will either enhance your brand or harm your brand. Every song makes a statement about your station.<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s an absolute killer for your P1\u2019s in the research then it\u2019s probably a no brainer.<\/p>\n<p>But \u2026\u2026it\u2019s not just about playing the songs that your audience tells you they love\u2026..it\u2019s also about playing the songs that <em>fit <\/em>the station\u2019s music essence. There are occasions where songs that don\u2019t fit the format test well\u2026..but it doesn\u2019t mean you should play them.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to play or not play a song and how frequently to do so should be driven by more than how appealing that song is to your station\u2019s listeners. The off quoted saying \u201cplay the hits\u201d fails to incorporate the \u201cart\u201d of knowing what are the <em>right hits.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A song that doesn\u2019t fit your station\u2019s music essence will damage your music images in the minds of the listeners and ultimately the station\u2019s brand.<\/p>\n<p>What happens when you play a song that fit the music brand promise?<\/p>\n<p>Look at it this way. You play 10 songs in an hour. If just one of those songs has the potential to cause the listeners to tune out or to confuse your music perceptions then your music is 10% off target. Two songs in the hour\u2026..you\u2019re 20% off target. You get my drift.<\/p>\n<p>Testing your station\u2019s music correctly is imperative to a station\u2019s success.
