{"id":1974,"date":"2020-01-16T12:28:14","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T01:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bprworld.com\/?p=1974"},"modified":"2020-01-16T12:28:14","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T01:28:14","slug":"can-your-station-handle-the-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bprworld.com\/de\/news\/can-your-station-handle-the-truth\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Your Station Handle the Truth?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By David Kidd, BPR<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1431\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bprworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DK.jpg?resize=112%2C113\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bprworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DK.jpg?w=298 298w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bprworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DK.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 112px) 100vw, 112px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If we ask a question, we should be able to accept the answer (provided the answer is honest and not tainted with bias).<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that as humans we sometimes find it difficult to accept the truth \u2026the reality\u2026\u2026over our own perceptions.<\/p>\n<p>For many years, I\u2019ve sat in strategy meetings and presented the results of a strategic\/perceptual study to program directors who are left shocked that their \u201cperfect\u201d radio station \u2026\u2026<em>the output of all their creative endeavours and sheer hard work<\/em>\u2026\u2026is considered less than perfect by the listeners.<\/p>\n<p>If you are going to ask a well-balanced sample of listeners what they think of the music on your station, whether the breakfast show really is fun and entertaining, which station plays the best music variety, how relevant your station is in the current media landscape\u2026\u2026.then be prepared to accept the jury\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>The respondents in a properly designed strategic study aren\u2019t answering the questions with any malice. They are providing HONEST opinions. It is their perceptions that matter\u2026. NOT yours!<\/p>\n<p>We are often too close to the action\u2026\u2026.. perhaps in some ways even biased.<\/p>\n<p>This is why asking the listeners what they think is so important to a station\u2019s success.\u00a0 You think a song is going to be a hit\u2026\u2026. the listeners think otherwise. You think your new breakfast show\u2026. the one that you put together\u2026.. the one that you have spent hours each day, week on week, monitoring and directing\u2026\u2026.is the game changer in the market.
