{"id":2479,"date":"2020-11-12T11:21:10","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T00:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bprworld.com\/?p=2479"},"modified":"2020-11-12T11:21:10","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T00:21:10","slug":"to-play-christmas-music-or-not-to-play-christmas-music-that-is-the-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bprworld.com\/de\/news\/to-play-christmas-music-or-not-to-play-christmas-music-that-is-the-question\/","title":{"rendered":"To Play Christmas Music or Not To Play Christmas Music, That is The Question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Wayne Clouten, BPR<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bprworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/WC.png?resize=122%2C96\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"96\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At this time of year at thousands of radio stations around the world those responsible for content management sit down and ask themselves three questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Should we play Christmas songs this year?<\/li>\n<li>If we do play them, how often should we play them?<\/li>\n<li>For how long should we play Christmas music?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are no convenient one-size-fits all answer to these questions because different stations have different issues to consider however there are a few guiding principles to take note of which may assist in your decisions this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Acknowledging The Christmas Spirit:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The key issue is celebrating the spirit and goodwill of the season with your listeners.\u00a0 Playing Christmas songs is only one aspect of this.\u00a0 Other Christmas content to consider includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Christmas themed audio branding and packaging<\/li>\n<li>Street promotions<\/li>\n<li>Social media<\/li>\n<li>Dedicated Christmas Music stream<\/li>\n<li>Well-wish messages from your personalities and artists<\/li>\n<li>Supporting a Christmas charity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Where the available pool of format compatible Christmas music is limited stations should consider placing more emphasis on one or more of the tactics above.\u00a0 A station can still sound very \u201cChristmas\u201d without actually playing much Christmas music.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Playing Christmas Music:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Oldies, AC, Full Service and soft AC stations have an advantage in terms of available song repertoire.\u00a0 For contemporary and niche formats the available pool of xmas music that fits the format is much more limited.\u00a0 The available pool of Christmas music you have to work with defines to a great extent the answer to the three questions listed earlier.\u00a0 What-ever you do musically should be noticeable otherwise there is no point in playing any Christmas music to begin with.\u00a0 Here are some of your options in terms of number of songs played:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One track per hour.<\/li>\n<li>100% Christmas songs on Christmas eve\/day<\/li>\n<li>Christmas song double play per hour (suits oldies and soft AC formats)<\/li>\n<li>Christmas song countdown leading up to Xmas Day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next dimension that has to be considered is when do you start playing Christmas music.\u00a0 There is no \u201cofficial\u201d start date which is better or worse than any other.\u00a0 In some markets there may be local heritage dates to consider however it is preferable for a station not to be seen as being \u201clate\u201d in starting it\u2019s Christmas tactics.\u00a0 Start dates to consider include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In societies where the Advent Calendar is observed then following the Advent dates is a safe choice. For 2020 the Advent period commences on the 29<sup>th<\/sup> November and finishes on 24<sup>th<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>1<sup>st<\/sup> December is a date which is naturally associated with the beginning of the Christmas month.<\/li>\n<li>In towns and cities where a communal Christmas tree is erected then a station starting it\u2019s Christmas tactics on the day the Christmas tree is officially lit should be considered.
