{"id":2765,"date":"2021-03-18T13:45:31","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T02:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bprworld.com\/?p=2765"},"modified":"2021-03-18T14:04:18","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T03:04:18","slug":"the-formative-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bprworld.com\/de\/news\/the-formative-years\/","title":{"rendered":"The Formative Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By David Kidd, BPR<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1431\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bprworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DK.jpg?resize=111%2C112\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bprworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DK.jpg?w=298 298w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bprworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DK.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Durham University have discovered something that radio programmers have known for decades\u2026. the age we make the strongest musical connection is when the records playing on the radio get entwined with major life events in our formative teenage years.<\/p>\n<p>The songs bring vivid memories flooding back in what is known as a \u201creminiscence bump\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in the Music &amp; Science journal, found \u201ca reminiscence bump in adolescence (peaking around age 14) for both ratings of the autobiographical salience of songs featured in the charts during that period and the familiarity of these songs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers said: \u201cThis suggests that memories that are central to one&#8217;s sense of identity are often inextricably associated with music. This may be related to the common tradition of coupling music with significant life events and the increased consumption and value placed on music during key periods of identity formation in adolescence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>But we programmers already knew that didn\u2019t we!!!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, the \u201creminiscence bump\u201d must be viewed objectively.
