But is this correct?

The short answer is: Sometimes but far less than people think.

Social media commentary reflects what some people think, amplified through platforms that reward intensity, visibility, and conflict. It rarely represents the full population, and often not even the majority.

Social media shows what the loudest, most motivated, most active groups think, not what the average person thinks. It’s a distorted mirror. Recognizable, but stretched, exaggerated, and selectively lit.

Some issues to consider:

The people who post the most are not representative. Most social media users consume rather than comment. Across major platforms, only about 10% of users generate 80–90% of the content. The silent majority is in fact, mostly silent.

Algorithms amplify emotion, not accuracy. Calm, nuanced, middle-ground opinions get buried in the noise. So, the commentary we largely see is shaped by what the algorithm thinks will keep you scrolling, not necessarily by what people actually believe, want or need.

People perform on social media. Users often post what will get likes or fits the identity they wish other people to see or believe. This means social media commentary is often manipulative, rather than sincere.

Different platforms create different echo chambers. Each social media platform has its own user profile with different demographics, cultural norms and political leanings.

The biggest distortion in social media is absence. Entire demographics who barely post at all or have learnt not to post. These representative of people who are too busy to comment, have developed a poor opinion of social media, do not feel they need to prove anything to anyone, or do not wish to have a public footprint.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

1,19

post-7880","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorised","category-featured

https://i0.wp.com/bprworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/pexels-castorlystock-4114787-scaled.jpg?fit=2560%2C1707
["GET
