That success isn’t an overnight ratings spike.

So, what does The Rock get right?

It knows exactly what it is.

The MediaWorks (parent company) website describes the station’s position succinctly: Rock is our Religion. The Rock is the home of great rock music, targeted at men aged 25-44 who enjoy a laugh and don’t take themselves too seriously. #1 baby! How good!

Now, the target may officially be 25-44 males, but as I mentioned in the opening, the brand is strong enough to reach well beyond that core.

The music, personalities, humour, promotions, imaging and attitude all come from essentially the same place

That’s increasingly rare in radio.

The personalities belong to the brand.

The Morning Rumble and Rock Drive with Jay & Dunc don’t sound like generic radio shows that could be transplanted onto another station tomorrow. They sound like The Rock. The humour can be irreverent but it’s always on target. That’s the point.

Listeners aren’t simply listening to a radio station. They’re joining a community….a club….a tribe.

The industry recognition backs that up. The Rock won multiple awards at the 2026 NZ Radio & Podcast Awards, while Jay & Dunc’s Drive show was named Best Music Network Team in 2025.

The music has a purpose.

The Rock isn’t trying to be everybody’s second-favourite station. Its rock position inevitably excludes some listeners….but creates considerably more passion among those who remain.

The station surrounds the music with things its audience actually cares about: humour, sport, mateship and big rock events. The Rock 2000 is a perfect example. It turns a music countdown into a major brand event. Last year, the countdown attracted nearly two million votes!

Most importantly, The Rock has a personality.

You could hear thirty seconds of it without hearing the station name and probably know what you’re listening to.

That might sound obvious.

It isn’t.

Too many radio stations have gradually become collections of songs, benchmarks, promotions and announcers. Everything may be professionally executed, but there is no particularly compelling reason to belong to them.

The Rock has created something more valuable: a tribe.

Its listeners don’t just know what music The Rock plays.

They know what The Rock stands for.

And that’s probably the biggest lesson from its success.

In a world where virtually anyone can provide you with music, the strongest music stations aren’t simply selling songs.

They’re selling belonging. They are selling a community.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

1

post-7960","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorised
["GET
