What is radio’s “X Factor’ in 2026? Let’s start with what is NOT radio’s X Factor any longer.
So what is radio’s X factor in 2026?
Increasingly, I think the answer is human unpredictability.
Those genuine “surprise” moments. A caller says something unexpected. A presenter tells a genuinely personal story. Two personalities disagree. Someone says something very funny or occasionally something they probably shouldn’t have said.
It is the feeling that something compelling is happening right now and I want to hear what happens next.
That is something an algorithm struggles to replicate.
Ironically, the better AI becomes, the more valuable this may become.
Radio shouldn’t try to beat Spotify at personalisation, TikTok at short-form video or YouTube at video.
It should use those platforms, and use AI aggressively behind the scenes, while investing in the thing competitors find hardest to manufacture: Interesting human beings creating unpredictable moments.
Music can be copied. Formats can be copied. Promotions can be copied. Even voices can now be copied!
But a great personality’s relationship with an audience is much harder to copy. That same point was strongly echoed by programmers and consultants at the 2026 Barrett Media Audio Summit: technology matters, but talent, trust, community and human connection remain radio’s strongest differentiators.
For decades we talked about radio being “live and local”.
For 2026 and beyond, perhaps the more important ambition is:
Live, human, compelling and unpredictable.
That may be radio’s real X factor.
