GENERATION Z – What are they doing with their smart phones?

This is the third in a series by BPR’s Andy Beaubien

In a previous instalment we identified the newest generation of media consumers – the 6 to 23 year age group.  We saw that they use their smart phones a lot. Today we will examine what they are doing on their phones.

*Commscope.com conducted an extensive survey of Gen Z media users in various cities around the world. In their report they identified Gen Z’s top five uses for their smart phone.

  1. Listening to music – 69% listen to music daily on their phone.
  2. SMS – 68% use their phone daily to send text messages.
  3. Games – 59% play games on their smart phone
  4. Watching videos – 56% watch videos either on line or downloaded.
  5. Text-based apps – 48% use apps

Their favourite app is, not surprisingly, You Tube. Here are the top ten:

  1. You Tube
  2. Whatsapp
  3. Instagram
  4. Facebook
  5. Snapchat
  6. Twitter
  7. Google apps
  8. Venmo
  9. Apple apps
  10. Spotify

This is a worldwide phenomenon. The highest use of You Tube is in South Korea, Whatsapp is most popular in Buenos Aires, Facebook is most popular in India and Twitter is most popular in Japan. In New York, London and Berlin Snapchat has replaced Facebook.

The Gen Z media world is in a state of constant flux because they are early adopters of new media. Traditional media such as radio and television have to fight for the attention of this demo group. Their world is wireless and on-line. They are shaping the media use of the future.
